Your estimates are a starting point. Your customers tell the real story.

Metorik's customer cohort reports show how lifetime value and repeat purchases develop over time. Compare customer segments and check your assumptions against your store's actual orders.

How to calculate customer lifetime value

Customer lifetime value (CLV or LTV) estimates the total revenue a customer generates while buying from your store. The customer lifetime value formula multiplies average order value by purchases per customer per year and the number of years you expect them to remain a customer.

Customer LTV = Average order value × Purchases per year × Customer lifespan in years

For example, a customer spending $75 per order, placing four orders per year and buying for three years generates $900 in lifetime revenue. Enter a 40% profit margin to calculate $360 in customer lifetime profit.

Where to find your inputs

  • Average order value: divide revenue after discounts and refunds, excluding sales tax, by orders.
  • Purchases per year: divide annual orders by the number of unique customers who purchased that year. Include one-time buyers.
  • Customer lifespan: use a realistic assumption informed by older customer cohorts. Try several scenarios if you do not have enough history.
  • Profit margin: use profit as a percentage of revenue, after the costs you want to include. Keep the same cost basis across scenarios, and leave it blank if unknown.

Use consistent revenue definitions and the same customer group for every input. A customer's first-to-last order gap alone does not establish their full lifespan, especially when they may still buy again.

Customer LTV and customer LTP

Customer LTV measures lifetime revenue. Customer LTP estimates lifetime profit by multiplying that revenue by the profit margin you enter. The costs included in your margin determine the costs reflected in the profit estimate.

Customer LTP = Customer LTV × Profit margin / 100

This calculator assumes your averages stay constant. It does not forecast individual customers, discount future cash flows, or use subscription churn. Check your estimates against observed customer cohorts as your store develops.

How do I calculate customer lifetime value?

Multiply average order value by purchases per customer per year and expected customer lifespan in years. A $75 order value, four purchases per year and three-year lifespan gives $900 in estimated revenue LTV. Multiply by your profit margin to estimate customer lifetime profit (LTP).

Are CLV and LTV the same thing?

CLV, CLTV and LTV are commonly used for customer lifetime value. Check whether a calculation represents revenue or profit: this calculator labels the two separately.

What if I do not know my customer lifespan?

Use older customer cohorts to inform a reasonable assumption, then save scenarios with different lifespans to see how much the result changes. If your store is new, treat lifespan as an estimate rather than a measured fact. Six months can be entered as 0.5 years.

What is customer LTP?

Customer lifetime profit (LTP) is customer lifetime revenue multiplied by the profit margin you enter. For example, $900 in lifetime revenue at a 40% profit margin gives $360 in lifetime profit. The costs reflected in that estimate depend on the costs included in your margin.

Which profit margin should I use?

Use a margin that reflects the costs you want to include. To calculate it, divide profit by revenue and multiply by 100. Use the same cost basis when comparing scenarios, and leave the field blank if you only want to calculate revenue LTV.

Can I save and share my calculations?

Yes. Save up to 10 named scenarios in this browser. Share Snapshot creates a link containing your current inputs and saved scenarios, so anyone with that link can view them. No account or store connection is required.
