The seeds of Verpakgigant were planted in a modest garage in Alkmaar by three friends, Erik Koomen, Robert de Beurs, and Florian Lem. “The Dutch packaging market was rather outdated and old-fashioned, often stuck in traditional ways of doing business. We wondered — what if we could make packaging simpler, more transparent, and more affordable?’” Driven by this idea, the trio began their journey into entrepreneurship while juggling studies and day jobs.
Their first venture, Luchtkussengigant.nl, focused on selling bubble mailers via dropshipping. “We started small, but we saw immediate interest from eCommerce businesses”. The success of this initial effort encouraged them to expand their product range, adding autolock boxes, filling paper, bubble wrap, and other essentials.
As the business grew, so did their ambition. Recognizing the need for a brand name that reflected their expanding offerings, the team rebranded as Verpakgigant. This translates from Dutch to English as Packaging Giant. “We wanted our name to capture the full scope of our mission—to shake up the packaging market and make it better for everyone involved”.
The founders’ backgrounds in IT and logistics helped give them an edge over their competition. “We used automation to scale quickly and improve efficiency”. This forward-thinking approach allowed them to meet growing demand at the same time as keeping costs low – laying the tough but fundamental groundwork for the thriving business Verpakgigant is today.

Another major challenge was shopping cart abandonment: “We noticed a lot of visitors were adding items to their carts but not completing their purchases”. The team suspected that price comparison was a significant factor but needed better tools to confirm and address this issue.
